In the early days of the Civil War, Aloysius Joseph Franz signed a three year enlistment in Company E, 83rd Regiment of Indiana Infantry. He was part of the campaign to take Vicksburg and volunteered to be part of the 150 man "storming party" that was to proceed the attack. Of the 150 men involved in the attack, 85% were killed or severely wounded in the action. Aloysius continued to serve and while serving in Georgia suffered a gunshot wound and was mustered out in July, 1865.
