Clay entered the service in February 1943. His basic training was in Miami, FL. He took additional training in Denver, CO. He was also in Goldsboro, NC. His overseas tour of duty included stints in Hawaii, Saipan, Iwo Jima, Ie Shima, and Okinawa. He served as an aircraft armorer. He was awarded the Good Conduct medal and the Asiatic-Pacific theater ribbon.
