Civilian: 
George was born on April 14th, 1895 at Blooming Grove, Waseca County, Minnesota.  His father and his mother, Julia, were both born in Norway.   The Broughton residence was in Section 34 of Morristown Township, Rice County, Minnesota.  George was farming before his entry into military service, and resumed farming in Morristown Township after discharge.

Military Service Record:
George enlisted on July 5, 1918 at St. Paul, Minnesota as a Private and was issued the serial number 4,612,829.  He was originally assigned to Company B of the 11th Marines 5th Brigade.  From July 5 to August 29, 1918 he trained at Paris Island, South Carolina.   From September 1 to September 6, 1918 he was at Fuautico, Virginia.  On September 30, 1918 he embarked from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the ship DeKalb.  On October 13 he arrived at Brest, France.  While in France he served with Company A, Machine Gun Battalion, 5th Brigade until June 16, 1919.   From October 13 to 21, 1918 he was located at Brest.  From October 23 to December 6, 1918 he was located at Ossoudun.  From December 8 to June 10, 1919 he was located at La Pallice.  From June 10 to July 3 he was again located at Brest.  On June 27, 1919 he departed France.  On July 13, 1919 he arrived at Brooklyn Navy Yard.  On July 15, 1919 he arrived at Fuautico, Virginia.  On July 26, 1919 he was  honorably discharged as a Private at Fuautico, Virginia.
