John entered the service in March 1941. His basic training was in Georgia. He took additional training in Florida. He was also stationed in Maryland and California. His overseas tour of duty included stints in England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. He served as a specialist in anti-aircraft fire control equipment. He was awarded four service stars.
