John entered the service in July 1942. His basic training was at Camp Robinson, AR. He took additional training at Fort Washington, MD. He was also at Sherman and Dennison, TX and Camp Beale, CA. His overseas tour of duty included stints in New Guinea and the Philippines. He served as a clinical psychologist and was included in the action at Hollandia, Leyte and Mindanao. He acquired a persistent skin disorder during this period of service and returned from Manila on hospital Ship " Ernestine Koranda" and was sent to Ashford General Hospital at White Sulphur Springs, WVA. He was awarded the New Guinea Campaign Medal with Battle Star, Southern Philippines Campaign Medal with battle Star, Bronze Star Medal, the Victory medal, plus American and Asiatic theater service ribbons.
