Kathleen entered the service in January 1943. Her basic training was in Chicago, IL. Her overseas tour of duty included stints in New Guinea, Australia, Philippines, New Zealand, and Korea . She served as a Chief Nurse. She contracted malaria and dengue Fever. She was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service ribbon with two campaign stars, the Philippine Liberation ribbon, World War II Victory medal, Army of Occupation medal (Japan), Korean Service ribbons with four campaign stars and the UN Service medal.
