Lester entered the service in September 1943. His basic training was in Sheepshead Bay, NY. His overseas tour of duty included several trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific voyages. He served as a war shipping administrator. He was awarded the Merchant Marine combat ribbon, Atlantic and Pacific War Zone Bars.
