Lewis was born on October 24, 1896 at Faribault, Rice county, Minnesota.  His father and his mother, Mary, were both born in the USA.  He was employed at farming with his mother on a farm on Route 8, Faribault, Minnesota.  He is referenced on a Rice County War Records Roster with an address at 520 Ravine Street East, Faribault, as of an unknown date.

Military Service Record:
Lewis enlisted on June 3, 1918 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota as a Private with a serial number of 956409.  On June 6 he was assigned to the Engineer Training Regiment at Camp Humpherys, Virginia.  On July 28, 1919 he was assigned to Company B of the 214th Engineers Regiment.  On September 20, 1918 he transferred to Company 4, Casual Regiment, 116th Engineers AEF APO 733.  On November 11, 1918 he transferred to Company A 122nd Engineers.  On September 30, 1918 he embarked from Hoboken, New Jersey on the ship George Washington.  On October 13, 1918 he arrived at Brest, France.  From October 13 until October 24, 1918 he was stationed at Brest, France.  From October 24 to October 31, 1918 he was stationed at Auger, France.  On July 12, 1919 he returned to Hoboken, New Jersey.  On July 19, 1919 he was discharged as a Private at Camp Dodge, Iowa.  He was reported as 0% disabled at that time.
