Lloyd entered the service in February 1941 after being called up from the National Guard. His basic training was at Camp Claiborne, LA. His overseas tour of duty included stints in Northern Ireland and Australia. He served in communications and saw action in New Guinea and the Philippines. He contracted malaria while he was in the service. He was awarded the American Defense Medal, Bronze Star, five Battle Stars, the European-Middle East-Africa and Asiatic-Pacific theater service ribbons, Philippine Liberation medal, and the Victory medal.
