Biography: 

Mel entered the service in March 1942. His basic training was in Cheyenne, WY. His overseas tour of duty included several locations in the Pacific theater. He served as a carpenter and saw action at Okinawa. He was awarded six Overseas Service Bars, a Battle Star and a Good Conduct Medal.
