Melvin was born October 7th, 1898 at Kenyon, Goodhue County, Minnesota. The native country of his father, G., and mother, Anna, was Norway and their residence was at Kenyon. Prior to enlisting he resided at Kenyon and was employed by P.E. Flick as a butcher, also located in Kenyon.
Military Service Record:
Melvin enlisted on May 16, 1917 at Faribault, Rice County, Minnesota as a Private and was assigned a serial number of 1,425,958. His intial assignment was with Hq Company, 2nd Infantry of the Minnesota National Guard (Hq Co 136 Infantry, 34th Division) stationed at Camp Cody, New Mexico. From December 22 to 25, 1917 he was in the Base Hospital at Camp Cody. On November 1, 1918 he was transferred to Company A of the 329th Infantry, 83rd Division. From November 20, 1918 until January 1, 1919 he was stationed at Eurahapolin, France. On November 1, 1917 he was promoted from Private to Corporal. On April 15, 1918 he was promoted to Mechanic. On October 13, 1918 he embarked on the ship Meleta from Hoboken, New Jersey. On October 24, 1918 he arrived in Liverpool, England. On June 31, 1919 he arrived at New York. On February 12, 1919 he was honorably discharged as a Mechanic at Camp Dodge, Iowa. At that time he was reported as 0% disabled.
