He attended Northfield High School and graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture in St. Paul. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on December 19, 1951, and served as a tank driver on the front line during the Korean Conflict - later serving as a teacher for other tank drivers. He attained the rank of Sergeant, and following his honorable discharge on September 3, 1953, he returned to Northfield and resumed farming with his brother NOrman. Richard was active in the Northfield Lions Club, Northfield Seniro Care Center and the Sons of Norway. He was also heavily involved in 4-H. Richard died on September 2, 2008.
