William entered the service in May 1943. His basic training was in Farragut, ID. He took additional training in San Diego, Ca. He was also stationed at Keyport, WA; Norfolk, VA; and Brooklyn, NY. He served as a torpedoman on the USS Haynesworth and saw action in Luzon, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He survived his ship being hit by a Japanese Kamikaze plane and a typhoon.
