William entered the service on August 9, 1862 when he enlisted in Co. 1, 124 Pennsylvania Volunteers, Infantry, where he served for nine months. During that time he was engaged in battle at South Mountain and Antietum, Maryland. He was discharged May 17, 1863. On June 18, 1863 he joined Co A.. 30th Pennsylvania State Troopers; they were under fire from Rebel Cavalry at Carlyle, Pennsylvania, and he was discharged the 26 of July, 1863. On August 18, 1864 he was commissioned by Governor Curtin of Pennsylvania, as 2nd Lieutenant, to assist in raising a Company. He joined Company D, 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and was engaged in battles at Chancellorsville and Fort Fisher, North Carolina, where he was wounded in the left leg and his foot burned while lying on the battlefield. He was discharged from the hospital Fortes Monroe, Virginia, on May 30, 1865, by General Order No. 82, of the War Department, as First Lieutenant, Company A, of same regiment, and returned home after the war.
